The story of this work

Overview

A drawing by George Chinnery depicts a Chinese man wearing a broad-brimmed hat, bending over a shallow basket resting on a large stone block. Part of an album containing 93 sketches made in Macau and its vicinity, the work was bequeathed in 1928 by James Orange. Chinnery, who lived in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852, often portrayed local figures such as Tanka boatwomen and Chinese merchants active in the region’s trade.
