This is a drawing by George Chinnery. It shows two people in a market scene. A seated vendor waits with goods. A boatwoman bends over to pick produce from a low basket. A child rides on her back. Chinnery worked in India and China in the early 1800s. He often sketched daily life with quick, sharp lines. This drawing is dated between September 1825 and May 1852. A drawing by George Chinnery depicts a seated vendor and a boatwoman, who stoops to reach produce from a shallow basket while carrying a child on her back. Part of an album containing 93 sketches made in Macau and its vicinity, the work was bequeathed in 1928 by James Orange. Chinnery, a British artist active in India and China, settled in Macau in 1825 and remained there until his death in 1852. The album includes portraits of Western merchants, Chinese hong merchants, and Tanka boatwomen.
