Christ on the Cross between the Two Thieves is a 1475 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three men nailed to crosses. The one in the middle is larger, with a crown on his head and arms spread wide. The two on the sides look smaller, one wearing a blue robe, the other a pink one. The background is simple, with a greenish ground and a dark border around the whole scene. Notice how the colors are flat and bright—blue, pink, and gold stand out against the faded paper. The lines are sharp and simple, like a printed design. Next, look up woodcut to see how this printing technique worked.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
