Christ on the Cross with Angels is a 1490 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This woodcut shows a man nailed to a cross at the center, surrounded by angels with wings and halos. Below, two figures stand on the ground—one woman with her hands clasped, one man holding a small object. The angels hold tools like hammers and cups, and a skull lies on the ground near the cross. The lines are sharp and simple, with no shading or color. The word "INRI" is above the cross, which is short for a Latin phrase often used in these scenes. The artist used a method that carved images into wood, then pressed ink onto the surface. Check out how this technique: woodcut works in other prints.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
