Christ Sitting on His Tomb with One Angel is a 1475 ink by German 15th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a half-naked man kneeling on a rocky surface with a halo behind his head. A robed figure with a green halo stands beside him, holding a tall green staff. The background has simple shapes—blocks of stone and a few lines for trees. The man’s bare chest and the angel’s robes are colored in soft reds and greens. The whole scene looks like it was carved into wood and then painted by hand. This is an example of a woodcut.
This 15th-century German artist carved vivid religious scenes into metal and wood, then hand-painted them in bright, symbolic colors.
