Mock Joust of War with Flying Shields and Without Bevors is a 1514 ink by German 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows two armored knights on horseback in a mock joust. Their shields float in the air around them. The horses rear up, ready for the pretend fight. The artist used layers of watercolor to build up rich colors. This technique, called glazing, makes the armor gleam. The scene feels playful, not serious. Check out the National Gallery of Art, Washington for this piece.
A German artist from the late 1500s drew lively scenes of knights clashing in parades and mock battles.
