Siout, Egypt

Siout, Egypt was created by Sanford Robinson Gifford in 1874. It was first recorded in the possession of Timothy B. Blackstone of Chicago by 1876, who lent it to an 1876 exhibition in Chicago. By 1880 it was owned by J.I. Nesmith of Brooklyn, who included it in the 1880 Gifford memorial exhibition.

The work passed through Vose Galleries of Boston to collectors Webster and Douglas B. Collins of Longmeadow, Massachusetts, by 1970. It was sold by Vose Galleries to Jerald Dillon Fessenden in 1977 and jointly acquired in 1986 by James Maroney and Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York. The National Gallery of Art, Washington, purchased the painting from these owners on 1 February 1999.
