About this work
Sanford Robinson Gifford returned to Tivoli in 1868, twelve years after his first visit, and stood before the cascatelle below the so-called Villa of Maecenas. Working from quick pencil sketches made on site, he painted this view up the Aniene valley toward Rome in 1870 in thin, transparent layers that dissolve form into light. It entered the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1912.
