The Triumph of Marriage is a 1698 ink by Claude Gillot, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows two lions pulling a chariot with a woman inside. The chariot is decorated with swirling patterns, and the lions look powerful. Behind them, trees and bushes fill the background, drawn with lots of small lines. The woman in the chariot holds a staff, and the whole scene feels busy and full of energy. The artist used lots of ink lines to create shadows and texture. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build depth with lines like these.
Claude Gillot (April 27, 1673 – May 4, 1722) was a French painter, printmaker, and illustrator, best known as the master of Watteau and Lancret.
