Sketch of a Young Lady in Violet (Esquisse de jeune femme a la violette) is a 1874 ink by Norbert Goeneutte, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a woman standing sideways, facing away from us. She wears a dark hat and a loose dress with a high collar. The lines are quick and wobbly, like a hasty drawing. The artist used a technique called drypoint to scratch into the metal plate, creating rough edges that hold ink. This makes the lines look slightly fuzzy. Look up drypoint to see how artists use tools to make marks like these.
Norbert Goeneutte (23 July 1854 – 9 October 1894) was a French painter, etcher and illustrator; notably for the novel La Terre by Émile Zola.
