Aether is a 1589 ink by Hendrik Goltzius, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a muscular, bearded man with wings and curly hair, standing on a cloud. His arms are outstretched, holding a staff in one hand and a small object in the other. The background has swirling shapes that look like wind or mist, and the whole image is framed in a rounded shape. The artist used different shades of gold, olive, and black to create depth and contrast, which makes the figure stand out. This kind of printing, called *chiaroscuro*, was popular in the Renaissance. Next, look up technique: woodcut to see how this image was made.
Hendrick Goltzius (German: , Dutch: ; né Goltz; January or February 1558 – 1 January 1617) was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter.
