Johan Gols [The Artist's Father] is a 1578 ink by Hendrik Goltzius, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This engraving shows a man in fancy 16th-century clothes. He faces us but turns his head a bit sideways. The lines are sharp and detailed. You can almost feel the texture of his ruffled collar and beard. Goltzius made this when he was just 26. He used tiny lines to shade the skin and fabric. The way he catches the light on the man’s face feels alive. Try looking up Rembrandt’s prints next.
Hendrick Goltzius (German: , Dutch: ; né Goltz; January or February 1558 – 1 January 1617) was a German-born Dutch printmaker, draftsman, and painter.
