The Couple, Self-Portrait with Wife (Das Paar, Selbstporträt mit Frau) is a 1922 ink by Walter Gramatté, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows two figures sitting close together, their faces blurred into overlapping lines. One holds a bunch of flowers, while the other’s hair fans out in sharp, curved strokes. The background is a flat, dark shape with a faint horizon line. The artist used a printing method called drypoint, where lines are scratched into a metal plate to create texture. The blue-green color comes from ink pressed into those grooves. Look up drypoint next to see how it works.
Walter Gramatté (8 January 1897 in Berlin – 9 February 1929 in Hamburg) was a German expressionist painter who specialized in magic realism.
