Lazzarini employs pronounced chiaroscuro, juxtaposing deep shadows with illuminated flesh and drapery to focus attention on the saint’s anguished expression. The dynamic arrangement of angels and clouds in the background creates a sense of movement typical of the High Baroque, while the careful modeling of faces reflects the artist’s academic training.

The painting was produced in Venice during Lazzarini’s mature period, when his workshop was a leading centre for religious commissions. After changing hands among private collectors, the canvas entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings, where it remains on display as part of the museum’s Baroque holdings.

Lazzarini’s career included teaching the future master Giambattista Tiepolo, situating him within a lineage of Venetian Baroque painters. His oeuvre frequently addressed biblical and saintly narratives, and this work exemplifies the period’s emphasis on dramatic, emotionally charged religious imagery.
