About this work

This print shows a tired-looking man slumped on a cross, his head drooping. He’s half-naked, with a crown of thorns on his head and a long beard. One arm is bent, resting on his knee, while the other hangs loose. A palm branch leans against his shoulder, and the ground below is rough with rocks and grass. The words “Ecce Homo” (Latin for “Behold the Man”) are printed to the right—this is a common title for images of Jesus after his trial. The artist carved deep lines to create shadows and texture, making the figure look almost three-dimensional. Look up chiaroscuro to see how this dramatic light-and-dark trick works.
