About this work

A man sits at a messy desk. Sunlight comes through a window and makes shadows on the wall. He holds a tool to a printing plate. Hassam used a tricky method called lithotint. It lets artists draw with tones instead of lines. The ink spreads softly, like watercolor but sharper. See this in person at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
