XXIV is a 1905 by Henri Fantin-Latour, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a single figure in profile, facing left. The person’s hair and clothing are drawn with quick, loose lines, but the face is barely there—just a faint shape. The background is a dark, smudged mass, like ink blended with a finger. The artist left big chunks of the paper bare, almost like they were in a hurry or just testing marks. The signature in the corner is small and messy, too. If you like this sketchy style, look up chiaroscuro.
Ignace Henri Jean Theodore Fantin-Latour (French pronunciation: ; 14 January 1836 – 25 August 1904) was a French painter and lithographer best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists and writers.
