About this work

This painting shows a busy beach scene with two large sailing ships anchored near shore. People in rough coats and hats walk along the wet sand, some carrying bags or tools. The water is choppy, and the sky is full of thick, dramatic clouds in soft blues and pinks. The ships have tall masts and flags, while the shore looks rocky with patches of seaweed. The artist used loose, sketchy brushstrokes to capture movement in the water and sky. The colors feel warm but muted, like a calm day turning stormy. The people and boats give the scene a lively, everyday feel. Check out the Victoria and Albert Museum to see this painting in person.
