The Hudson at Nyack is a 1858 ink by John Henry Hill, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a calm river with a small boat far off. Trees line the shore, their branches drawn in quick, dark lines. The sky above is light, with soft clouds. The water looks still, and the grass by the bank is simple, almost sketchy. The artist used ink and wash to keep it loose and quick. The paper is light brown, making the dark lines stand out. Look up cross-hatching to see how artists build shadows with lines.
John Henry Hill (1839–1922) was an artist, born in West Nyack.
