Landscape with Castle at Right, Surrounded by Rocks is a 1546 ink by Augustin Hirschvogel, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a dark, jagged landscape with a castle on the right side. The castle has tall towers and a bridge leading to it. In the middle, a small group of people stands near a river, and bare trees line the banks. The scene looks rough and uneven, like it was drawn quickly with sharp lines. The artist used a technique that creates fine, scratchy details—this is an etching. The lines are all hand-drawn into a metal plate, then inked and pressed onto paper.
