Plate 37: Two Spaniels with a Gourd is a 1594 gouache by Joris Hoefnagel, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows two dogs standing on a patch of grass with a small mound behind them. One dog is light brown and white, standing tall on its hind legs. The other is darker brown, standing on all fours. Above them, a green gourd hangs from a vine. The dogs look like spaniels, a breed often painted back then. The gourd and Latin text add a mix of nature and old wisdom to the scene. Next, check out watercolor, glazing to see how artists built up colors like this.
Joris Hoefnagel or Georg Hoefnagel (1542 – 24 July 1601) was a Flemish painter, printmaker, miniaturist, draftsman and merchant.
