Plate 38: Burbot, Rockling, and Other Fish is a 1594 gouache by Joris Hoefnagel, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows five fish floating in a light blue circle. The fish are drawn carefully, with different shapes and colors—some are long and slim, others short and round. One fish even has a long, eel-like body. The background is plain water, and the whole scene is framed by a thin gold line. The artist numbered each fish, which might mean they were studying how to tell them apart. The gold paint around the edge looks fancy, like a border for a special page. Next, check out technique: watercolor, glazing to see how artists built up colors like this.
Joris Hoefnagel or Georg Hoefnagel (1542 – 24 July 1601) was a Flemish painter, printmaker, miniaturist, draftsman and merchant.
