Cologne is a 1635 ink by Wenceslaus Hollar, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This drawing shows a river with a big windmill on the left bank, labeled *S. Severin*. Behind it, a city stretches across the horizon, with church spires and rooftops packed close together. The sky is light, with a few wispy clouds, and the water has tiny ripples. Notice the tiny text labels like *Colln* and *Duetz*—these mark real places along the river. The artist used fine lines to show every detail, from the windmill’s blades to the distant buildings. Want to know more? Try looking up etching.
