Animals from an Ancient Wall Painting [Table I] is a 1547 ink by Italian 16th Century, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
You see a sheet of paper filled with wild animals. Hounds stand tall. Horses prance. All are etched in fine lines. This isn’t a painting. It’s an engraving, cut into metal with a sharp tool then inked and pressed. The lines are crisp, full of detail. Look up the technique called cross-hatching to see how artists make shadows with overlapping lines.
A 16th-century Italian sculptor left us small bronze works in dark brown and gold.
