The Siege of La Rochelle: Plate 6 is a 1629 by Jacques Callot, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This drawing shows a busy battle scene with soldiers, cannons, and horses spread across a landscape. Buildings and forts are scattered around, with smoke rising in some areas. A river winds through the middle, and roads connect the scattered groups of people. The artist packed a lot of tiny details into the scene, like individual soldiers and tiny trees. This kind of careful, busy drawing was common in the 1600s. Check out the Baroque movement to see how artists used drama and detail like this.
Jacques Callot was a baroque printmaker and draftsman from the Duchy of Lorraine.
