The Combat of the Horatii and the Curatii is a 1783 ink by Jean-François Janinet, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This painting shows a chaotic battle scene with three men fighting in the foreground. One man in blue is on the ground, another is kneeling, and a third stands over him with a sword. Behind them, a large group of soldiers holds spears and shields, while a robed figure floats above the clouds holding a spear and olive branch. Notice how the artist uses bold outlines and flat colors to make the scene feel dramatic. The floating figure might be a symbol rather than a real person.
