Silenus Accompanied by a Satyr and a Faun is a 1635 ink by Christoffel Jegher, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows three heavy-set, hairy men tangled together in a forest. One stands tall with a wild beard, another clings to him from behind, and the third leans in from the side. Their bodies twist awkwardly, and the ground beneath them is rough with roots and bushes. The rough lines and dramatic poses suggest movement and energy. This is a woodcut, meaning it was carved into wood and printed—notice how the lines are sharp and the shading is simple. Look up woodcut to see how this printing method works.
Christoffel Jegher (1596–1652) was a Flemish artist, born in Antwerp.
