Three Scenes on the Road to Calvary is a 1649 ink by Christoffel Jegher, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This trio of black-and-white woodcuts shows three dramatic moments along a dusty path. On the left, a group of people struggle under heavy wooden beams, some kneeling while others push from behind. The middle scene has two men carrying a limp body on a stretcher, surrounded by onlookers. The rightmost panel features a woman in flowing robes cradling a small child, while a soldier looks on. The figures are stiff and angular, with sharp lines that stand out against the plain background. Notice how the artist uses shadows and light to show movement and emotion, even though it’s just ink on paper. Want to see more like this? Check out the technique: woodcut.
