Sandrart employs a strong chiaroscuro effect, with a beam of light entering from the upper right that highlights the figure’s face, wings, and garment while the surrounding space recedes into deep shadow. The contrast between illuminated and obscured areas creates a sense of three‑dimensionality and emotional intensity characteristic of mid‑Seventeenth‑century Baroque painting.

The painting entered the Alte Pinakothek’s holdings as part of the museum’s early acquisitions of German Baroque art. Documentation traces its ownership back to the artist’s workshop, with no recorded sales or transfers before its inclusion in the museum’s collection in the 19th century.

Joachim von Sandrart, a prominent figure in German art of the 1600s, was known for his historical and religious subjects rendered with dramatic lighting.
