Following Grimson's ownership, the painting passed through the London branch of M. Knoedler & Co. and was likely acquired from the firm's New York location by Mrs. Henry C. Lancashire.
The work remained within the Lancashire family, descending to her daughter, Mrs. Richard Southgate of Manchester, Massachusetts. In 1951, Mrs. Southgate donated the portrait to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., where it remains in the collection.
