Finding the Sheep (Le mouton retrouve) is a 1874 ink by Alphonse Legros, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a lone person kneeling in a field, bent over and holding a sheep. Tall trees stand behind them, and a wooden fence runs along the right side. The lines are loose and quick, like a hurried sketch. The artist used a technique that lets ink sit in the grooves of the plate, creating a soft, textured look. This style was great for capturing movement and emotion. Check out etching to see how artists use acid and ink to make prints like this.
Alphonse Legros (French pronunciation: ; 8 May 1837 – 8 December 1911) was a French, later British, painter, etcher, sculptor, and medallist.
