This is a black-and-white drawing of a man’s face and shoulders. His curly hair and mustache are detailed with quick, sketchy lines. The collar of his shirt has sharp, angled strokes, almost like overlapping feathers. The artist used tiny parallel lines to build up shadows—this is called cross-hatching. It gives the drawing texture and depth without color. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists create shading with lines.
