Untitled is a 1885 unspecified by Louis Mettling, held at Rijksmuseum.
You see a young man sitting in profile, wearing a metal shirt, a wide-brimmed hat, and resting both hands on the hilt of a sword. No one knows who painted it or when exactly—just that it was made sometime between 1870 and 1900. The metal shirt, called a *halsberg*, suggests he’s dressed like a soldier from much earlier, maybe the 1600s. It feels like someone copied an old portrait but didn’t sign it.
