About this work

This black-and-white scene shows a group of people gathered in what looks like a grand room. A woman kneels in the center, holding a staff, while others stand around her—some pointing, others talking. In the background, a small window reveals a town with towers and buildings. The people wear old-fashioned clothes, and the artist used lots of lines to show folds in their robes and faces. Notice how the woman kneeling looks nervous, while the men around her seem either curious or judgmental. The tiny town scene in the window adds a quiet, distant feel to the whole image. This is an engraving, so the artist carved lines into metal to create the picture.
