Chasse-maree au plus pres is a 1844 graphite by Charles Meryon, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows three ships on a choppy sea. The largest ship in the center has two tall masts with billowing sails, while smaller boats float nearby. In the background, a rocky shore and a few trees line the horizon, and the waves look rough. The artist used quick, light lines to capture movement in the water and sails. The title hints this might be about tides or fishing boats at work. Next, check out the Romanticism movement for more dramatic seascapes.
Charles Meryon (sometimes Méryon, 23 November 1821 – 14 February 1868) was a French artist who worked almost entirely in etching, as he had colour blindness.
