Views of Venice: The Courtyard of the Ducal Palace is a 1741 by Michele Marieschi, a Baroque work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This etching shows a grand courtyard packed with people. Tall buildings line both sides, their arched windows and detailed stonework creating a sense of depth. In the center stands a large, domed church with smaller towers, while a bridge arches over a canal in the background. The artist used shading to make the buildings look three-dimensional, especially on the rooftops and facades. The crowd below adds life to the scene, with some walking and others gathered in small groups. Next, check out the Baroque movement to see how artists used drama and light in their work.
