Untitled is a 1712 ink by Okumura Masanobu, a Baroque work, depicting Actor, held at Metropolitan Museum of Art.
This print shows three people in a simple scene. On the left, a man in a tall hat holds a fan and stands near a box. His clothes have bold patterns and a red seal on his chest. In the middle, a small child looks up, holding a branch with flowers. On the right, a woman in a long robe holds a fan too, with flowers on her sleeve. The lines are sharp and detailed, especially on the fabrics and faces. The artist used simple colors, mostly black and a little red. Want to learn more? Try looking up cross-hatching.
Okumura Masanobu lived in Edo (now Tokyo) when the city was a flashy, fast-growing hub of theater, gossip, and new ideas.
