It then passed to Charles‑Auguste‑Louis‑Joseph, comte de Morny, who sold it at Phillips, London, in June 1848 (no. 108).
Subsequent owners included Mrs. Stephen Lyne‑Stephens, whose Christie’s auction in May 1895 (no. 340) brought the work to the dealer Charles Sedelmeyer in Paris; it was later handled by Eugene Fischhof before being acquired in 1898 by Peter A. B. Widener. The painting remained in the Widener family, entering the National Gallery of Art in 1942 as a gift from Joseph E. Widener.
