History & Provenance
Isack van Ostade created the oil-on-panel painting Workmen before an Inn in 1645. The work's earliest recorded ownership traces to the Van Tol collection, followed by a sale in Souterwoude on June 15, 1779. It subsequently entered the collection of Jean Etienne Fiseau in Amsterdam, passing to his widow before being sold at her estate auction in August 1797.
The painting later belonged to the de Brienen van de Grootelindt family in Amsterdam, remaining with three generations until an estate sale in Paris in May 1865.
Subsequent owners included a Marquis in Paris, the Comte Henri Greffulhe, and Adolf Mayer in The Hague, who acquired it in 1939. The work was sold to Dr. Claus Virch in 1973 and then to the Brod Gallery in 1977. It was purchased by Richard A. and Lee G. Kirstein, who initiated a partial and promised gift to the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., in January 1991, with the gift completed in July of that year.
