Elizabeth, Queen of England is a 1592 ink by Crispijn van de Passe I, a Renaissance work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white engraving of a woman dressed in fancy 16th-century clothes. She wears a big ruff collar, a crown, and a heavy, decorated dress. In one hand, she holds a globe, and in the other, a scepter with an orb on top. The background is plain, but the edges of the print have Latin text and a coat of arms. The lines in the engraving are made by pressing a sharp tool into a metal plate, creating a detailed, textured look. This technique lets artists show light and shadow without color.
