Maria of Austria, Infanta of Spain is a 1622 ink by Simon van de Passe, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This is a black-and-white portrait of a woman with pale, smooth skin and light hair pulled back. She wears a high, starched collar that flares out around her neck, and a dark dress with a chain necklace peeking under the fabric. The background is plain, but her face glows from light streaming in from the top left. The words around her head read *"Serenissima Maria"* and *"Soror Philippi"* in fancy script, hinting at her importance. The artist used fine lines to create shadows and texture, especially on her collar and hair. Next, look up engraving to see how artists like this made detailed prints with just a metal plate and ink.
