Propriétaire is a 1857 by Paul Gavarni, a Impressionism work, held at Cleveland Museum of Art.
This sketch shows a skinny man in a long, shabby coat and a tall, rumpled top hat. His hands are stuffed in his pockets, and he’s standing on a sidewalk outside a building with a window. The background is plain, but there’s a pile of old chairs and a toolbox leaning against the wall. The title says *Propriétaire*—French for “property owner”—but he looks more like a struggling one. The drawing is part of a series called *Pensionnaires Parisiennes*, which poked fun at Parisian life. If you like this style, check out Realism next.
Paul Gavarni was the pen name of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (13 January 1804 – 24 November 1866), a French illustrator, born in Paris.
