Centaur visant les Nues (Centaur aiming at the Clouds) is a 1895 ink by Odilon Redon, a Impressionism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a half-human, half-horse creature standing on a rocky ledge. It’s pulling back a bowstring with both arms, aiming upward. The lines are loose and scratchy, like quick pencil strokes. The creature’s wild hair and the rough texture of the rock add to the sense of movement. This was made using a printing method that lets artists draw directly on stone. Look up lithography to see how this technique works.
Born Bertrand-Jean Redon on 20 April 1840 in Bordeaux, the artist adopted the name Odilon from his mother, Marie-Odile.
