Winthrop Sargent is a 1802 ink by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This small engraving shows Winthrop Sargent’s face in tight detail. The dark paper makes his sharp cheekbones and high collar pop. Light hits one side of his face while the other fades into shadow. Mezzotint is tricky: artists roughen the metal plate then smooth it to create shades. This print has tiny cross-hatched lines that look like real skin. See it in person at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
