Le Colisée de Rome is a 1650 ink by Israël Silvestre, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This black-and-white print shows the Colosseum in Rome, drawn with sharp lines. The building’s arches and tiers are detailed, with people walking nearby. Trees and a small bridge appear in the foreground, and the sky is lightly sketched. The artist used a technique that lets them carve fine lines into metal plates. This creates the crisp, textured look you see here. Look up etching to see how it works.
Israel Silvestre (13 August 1621 in Nancy – 11 October 1691 in Paris), called the Younger to distinguish him from his father, was a prolific French draftsman, etcher and print dealer who specialized in topographical views and perspectives of famous buildings.
