The portrait Joseph Dugan by Thomas Sully dates to 1810 and was commissioned as a likeness of its subject. Its early provenance traces to the sitter's great-grand-niece, Mrs. Margaret B. Dohan of Philadelphia. By 1917 it had entered the collection of Herbert Lee Pratt, a New York industrialist with residences in New York City and Glen Cove, Long Island.
Pratt later gave the painting to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., where it was accessioned in 1945. The oil on canvas measures 91.8 cm in height and 73.5 cm in width. No further provenance details prior to Dohan's ownership are recorded in the Gallery's curatorial files.
