Two Figures Seated to the Right of a Road is a 1628 ink by Herman van Swanevelt, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This print shows a quiet road cutting through a landscape. On the right side, two small figures sit near a tree, their backs to us. The road curves gently, leading toward a distant horizon where a lone person walks. The scene is framed by a dark border, and the whole image has a soft, smudged look. The artist used fine lines to show light and shadow, making the trees and grass look textured. This style was common in etchings, where ink is pressed into a metal plate. Next, look up etching to see how artists like this made prints.
Herman van Swanevelt (1603–1655) was a Dutch artist, born in Woerden.
