The House on the Rock is a 1628 ink by Herman van Swanevelt, a Baroque work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This image shows a black-and-white scene of a rocky shore with two small figures walking near the water. Behind them, a tree stands on the left, and a small house sits on a hill to the right. The waves crash against the rocks, and a ship is visible far out in the sea. The artist used a technique that creates fine, detailed lines—likely to show texture in the rocks and water. This kind of printmaking was common in the 1600s. Try looking up etching to see how it works.
Herman van Swanevelt (1603–1655) was a Dutch artist, born in Woerden.
