A Bull on a Ledge is a 1774 ink by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a single bull standing on a flat, rocky ledge. The animal’s fur is drawn in quick, dark strokes, with patches of white on its face and legs. Its horns curve upward, and its tail sways loosely behind it. The background is mostly blank, keeping all focus on the bull. The artist used ink and wash to create bold, shadowy shapes—no fine details, just strong lines. The bull’s stance looks relaxed, almost like it’s pausing mid-step. Next, check out Tiepolo, Giovanni Domenico for more of his quick, expressive sketches.
