The Raising of Tabitha is a 1794 ink by Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, a Romanticism work, held at National Gallery of Art.
This sketch shows a chaotic crowd around a kneeling woman on the floor. A man in the center stands with his arms out, as if commanding attention. Others reach toward him, some with raised hands or open mouths—like they’re shouting or praying. The background looks like a stone wall with an arch, but it’s drawn roughly, almost like a stage set. The artist used quick, sketchy lines to show movement, making the scene feel urgent. The brown ink and wash give everything a warm, smudged look, like it was drawn fast. Next, check out cross-hatching to see how artists build texture with lines.
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (August 30, 1727 – March 3, 1804) was an Italian painter and printmaker in etching. He was the son of artist Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and elder brother of Lorenzo Baldissera Tiepolo.
